At Thomas Jefferson School of Law, we believe strongly in providing our students with ample opportunities to develop and hone their lawyering skills in "real world" scenarios where they serve real clients and/or real employers. Students who take advantage of our Clinical Programs don't have to wait until after graduating and taking the bar to experience real lawyering. Students who participate in these opportunities benefit in numerous ways, including building their resumes and getting a taste of different areas of practice.

For instance, you can earn academic credit serving as an extern at law firms, government agencies, corporations and public interest organizations. You also can discover first-hand what it is like to be a lawyer by working in one of our several "live-client" clinics, serving small businesses and entrepreneurs, artists and inventors, or struggling veterans.

We are proud of the work our students perform through these clinics. Thomas Jefferson School of Law is one of only 11 law schools in the nation and the only law school in California to have both a USPTO certified Patent Clinic and Trademark Clinic, allowing students to help creative clients protect their works. The students working in our Veterans Legal Assistance Clinic have helped more than 500 formerly homeless veterans with their legal needs. We also offer a Veterans Self-Help Legal Workshop where our students work with licensed attorneys to provide assistance to veterans who are representing themselves in legal matters.

Through our highly successful Mediation Program, students resolve real disputes for real clients in Small Claims Court. We also have a Small Claims Workshop where students help individuals learn how to represent themselves in Small Claims Court.

Why should Thomas Jefferson School of Law be the school of choice for active duty service members, veterans and military spouses? We are dedicated to supporting those who serve or have served in numerous ways, including:

  1. Our academic policies meet the needs of active duty service members and those transitioning out of military service.  We offer both full-time and part-time enrollment (as well as the opportunity to switch between the two) and welcome entering classes in both the spring and the fall semesters.
  2. We have a large and vibrant community of military spouses, active duty service members and veteran students and alums.  Our culture reflects an understanding of the unique experiences and career goals of students with a military connection, and we have an on-campus chapter of Student Veterans of America.
  3. We offer generous merit scholarships for military spouses and current active duty service members.
  4. We offer a Veterans Legal Assistance Clinic that partners with Veterans Village of San Diego, a residential rehabilitation program that helps homeless veterans get back on their feet. We also offer a Veterans Self-Help Clinic that provides legal assistance and guidance to veterans who are representing themselves in legal matters.

Your SBA is requesting that all 3L/4L students donate $20 (+$1.00 PayPal fee) towards the 2013 Class Gift.

KEY POINTS ON WHY YOU SHOULD DONATE:

  1. The Student Bar Association began instituting a Class Gift in 2011 from donations by the 3L/4L students for that graduating term.
  2. The PayPal link below receives donations of a recommended $20 per 3L/4L student on the SBA website (although donations will be open to the entire school and community).
  3. The total funds collected will then be used for a painting and plaque with the graduation Month/Year on it.
  4. School ranking and ABA recognition is directly tied to class gifts, donations, and fundraising as it shows students care about their institution and what happens to their school after they graduate.
  5. This is another key aspect in changing the way our community of law schools and our country views our law school, while keeping to the principles that made our time at Thomas Jefferson School of Law a wonderful experience.

What prerequisites does this program have?

The only prerequisites you need are the completion of one year of law school and a strong interest in intellectual property law.

How will this program benefit me?

Students will have the opportunity to experience the process of receiving assignments from a faculty partner, conducting research, drafting various types of documents, and discussing their conclusions all in a one-on-one direct feedback relationship. Students will also receive broad exposure to aspects of IP law in the industries of technology, entertainment, and sports areas through CLE-style programs. Moreover, students will have the opportunity to network with area attorneys and judges.

Will I be able to take other summer classes at TJSL?

Yes, IP Practicum is scheduled to allow students to participate in our regular San Diego summer program, which begins immediately after the practicum and runs for seven weeks. Students may earn a maximum of 11 units three for the IP Practicum and eight for the summer program. IP Practicum students may also attend the Thomas Jefferson School of Law summer program in Nice, France, a four-week program beginning in late June that provides four units of law school credit.

How do I apply and pay my tuition?

Students wishing to enroll should contact Professor Steven Semeraro (ssemeraro@tjsl.edu; 619-961-4305).

What is the TJSL IP Fellowship Program?

This program provides a variety of opportunities to law students to study and experience IP law under the tutelage of one of the largest and most experienced IP faculties in the country. It includes access to USPTO-certified clinics offering both patent and trademark services. Students working in these clinics receive their own practice number and interact directly with clients and USPTO examiners under the supervision of an experienced patent and trademark attorney. The program is open to transfer students and scholarship support is potentially available. For more information, please contact the Center for Law and Intellectual Property at clip@tjsl.edu.

San Diego is a great place to be in the summer! The law school is located just a few blocks from the exciting nightlife of the historic Gaslamp District. San Diego's beaches are just minutes away, and hiking trails and rock climbing opportunities abound throughout the county.

The law school can assist students with arrangements for short-term accommodations. Contact Lisa Ferreira at lisaf@tjsl.edu for more information.

Thomas Jefferson School of Law is conveniently located for transportation purposes. San Diego’s efficient mass transit trolley system stops just two blocks from the law school’s front door, and three of the county’s major freeways have exit and entrance ramps within blocks of campus. For those students with cars, it is a convenient commute to TJSL from most communities.
