Game 1:

Conditions: A thrill of Pumpkin Spice GOALS In the Air

Match-Up: The Jugardores: Soccer Legends v. Malicious Tortfeasors

Score: 17-1

The Jugardores came out with a fire that even Renaldo could not quash! The goalie (Donny) for

the Malicious Tortfeasors saw so many body shots it looked like the Hard Rock on a Saturday

night.

The Malicious Tortfeasors commented after the game that although they lost today, it is no

problem because they are training for Brazil 2014!

When the Jugardores commented to the press they were media shocked and could only

manage one word: EPIC!

Game 2:

Time: 3pm

Conditions: Some REAL stinkiness in the arena

Match- Up: #StinkyPinkies v. REAL Madrid FC

Score: 11-1

REAL Madrid and the #StinkyPinkies duked it out for the first half keeping the score relatively

close in what ended in a 10 point gap. The game went well minus a close shot from John

Young to Matt’s cohones. And from REAL Madrid came a comment about how there was just

“ something about how Bobby scored all those goals… there are just no words to describe the

beautiful feeling.”

Other comments from their team consisted of a “well fought match” and “a hope that Matt can

still have kids.”

The Stinkies did not comment other than Captain Abreu who added that he took “1 shot=1

goal.”

Well said captain.

Game 3:

Time: 4pm

Conditions: A whole lot of happy feet but not quite a dozen.

Match-Up: Happy Feet v. Delman’s Dozens

Score: 4-1

This game was close and heated the whole way through, but Delman’s dozens couldn’t keep up

with the cute and shuffling Happy Feet.

Both teams declined to comment after the game.

Game 4

Time: 5pm

Conditions: Forfeits Suck!

Match-Up: 4L’s Do It Longer v. Cal West Free Agents

Score: 0-0

The Cal West Free Agents decided to shockingly! Not show up again! They heard who they had

to play and got scareddddd!

Game 5

Time: 6pm

Conditions: There was nothing to be determined about this game for Cal West #2

Match-Up: TBD v. Cal West #2

Score: 10-1

There seemed to be a lot of running but not a whole lot of goal scoring for TBD this game.

The effort that both teams gave was exhilarating and really gave the crowd something to look

forward to next week for!

Goodluck in the Championships teams!

On Wednesday, November 13, the Business Law Society hosted an academic panel entitled

“Medicinal Marijuana: Is It Really Legal?” The panel brought together several of San Diego’s

top Medicinal Marijuana Law academics and practitioners in a lively discussion. These

panleists included TJSL Professor Alex Kreit (Director of the Center for Law & Social Justice),

Collective Director Stephen McCamman (Professor of Political Science at Cuyamaca College),

Criminal Defense Attorney Lance Rogers (General Counsel for the California Cannabis

Industry Association) and TJSL Alum Kimberly Simms (Civil Attorney specializing in Medical

Marijuana Law).

Amongst the topics discussed were the overall legal and regulatory environment of the medicinal

marijuana industry within San Diego County today, the nature of business planning in an

industry so wrought with uncertainty and commercial instability, and the implications of being

involved with a medicinal marijuana collective.

The event received a positive response from students and faculty alike as it created a forum to

discuss a topic that is rapidly emerging in mainstream politics. San Diego County is unique in

that it does not have an outright ban on medicinal marijuana businesses nor does it have in place

a concrete set of regulatory guidelines by which businesses can comply with the law, explained

Professor Kreit. While there are no firm plans for this to change in the immediate future, there is

certainly a general sentiment that in the coming years, Medicinal Marijuana will become a hot

topic throughout elections across the nation, perhaps even stretching to the Presidential Election

in 2016.

On a more intimate level, Stephen McCamman had an opportunity to express what it is that

drives him as a business manager within this industry, explaining how he feels compelled to hit

the ground running each and every morning with the notion that if what he helps to accomplish

enables a cancer patient, for example, to hold down enough food to keep them alive for another

week, he has achieved something both noble and entirely worthwhile. He also emphasized that

for all the risk involved, there is a human element that propels his own sense of justice and

reward.

Any time that students and professionals can come together around a progressive, controversial

topic that has tangible implications within the city around us, the whole community benefits, and

this panel was an outstanding success by that measure. The Business Law Society would like to

thank those students who participated as well as the panelists whom made the event possible.

Fall 2013

This past Saturday, November 16, the Outdoors Club and the Environmental Law Society ended the semester with its 5K Fun Run Fundraiser.  The run/walk was a great opportunity to bring the Thomas Jefferson community--students, faculty, professors, and alumni--together before heading into finals.

There were over twenty Thomas Jefferson participants, including the Director of Facilities, Dennis Sable, and Professor Cromer Young, who was accompanied by her son.  The loop route started at the front doors of Thomas Jefferson and passed the newest addition to East Village, the San Diego Public Library.  The route continued to head south, passed Petco Park and the Hilton Bayfront, before it looped through Embarcadero Marina Park South.  The route continued further along the harbor, before participants turned around, and headed back to campus, this time without looping the Marina Park.

The Outdoors Club and the Environmental Law Society were excited to organize the event and look forward to organizing future end-of-the-semester 5K, and possible 10K, run/walks.  A portion of this semester’s proceeds from the 5K was donated to the Disaster Relief Fund Drive for the victims in the Philippines of the Super Typhoon Haiyan that is being organized by Thomas Jefferson School of Law Alumni and Students.

I hosted the event to help people who are interested in the political sector get firsthand knowledge of how to effectively pursue a career in the field. The event was great! The elected officials gave really practical advise on how to enter the political field.  The advice they gave really seemed to resonate with high school students and law school students in attendance.

The law students who participate in CLIMB are so active in their efforts to create a positive impact on the lives of young Crawford High School students. I wanted to give them an outlet to add to the positive work they do with the Crawford High School students.

The number one thing that stood out at the end of the event is the number of students that gave me their information with the request that I contact them to become involved. One law student approached me and explained how she was always so active in political campaigns in her home state and how she would like to do so here in San Diego. Many other high school students inquired on how they could volunteer. The event was a complete success.

Fall 2013

Every bar exam taker has a story.  While attending the December 2010 Thomas Jefferson School of Law Graduation seeing friends graduate, Bob Ames, former Board of Trustee to the law school, stated that he remembered his story and it included a person who sat next to him during the bar exam, and after reading each essay question, made a loud “gasp” sound as if he was shocked at each question.  The story brought some laughter, as well as the further realization of the change to come in each graduate’s life. The purpose of this article is to provide practical and common sense advice to those who will prepare for and take a bar exam.

During the summer after finishing your second year and about to begin your third and final year of law school, you realize that you are about to come upon a significant change in your life.  You begin to consider taking and passing a bar exam, paying back your student loans, finding a job, making a living, and paying taxes from your salary.  I remember thinking, this “pop quiz” is going to be a challenge, but you must greet this challenge with every effort and thought.  It is at this stage that you begin to build the foundation that prepares you for taking and passing the bar exam.

It is during Legal Synthesis that you are first introduced to bar prep material and ponder the amount of information you have to remember and analyze.  To be quite honest, make sure to pay attention in this class or classes if you take Legal Synthesis II with the California-specific subjects on the California Bar Exam.  Do not spend multiple hours on the computer in class typing emails and handling business not related to learning and re-learning the law.  This is in essence the battle that all law students must contend within themselves.  The bar exam is a battle between learning and analyzing the law, and managing your personal affairs (administrative, job hunting, student activities, family, etc.).  This in laid the hardest challenge for me, considering my involvement with things not related to learning the law—but in the end, discipline prevailed and allowed for the confidence walking into and out of the bar exam.

With that said, substance and forum are your keys to passing the bar.  The one constant that stayed with me from the practicing attorneys and mentors who offered advice on the bar exam, was based on substance (learning the law) and forum (where and how you study the law and how you lead your life during the bar exam).  The substance is what you learn in the bar prep programs, on your own, and from supplements, outlines, and spending the time reviewing, writing, and analyzing the law.  The forum is things like leaving your cell phone at home (those who know me realize this would have been my “Achilles Heel” had my cell phone been carried along with me to the library), studying in the library to mock the actual exam, and not surfing the internet, or checking Facebook.  However, you must also keep your sanity by setting a schedule before beginning bar prep and sticking to it, and remember your schedule includes free time and you time.   One last point regarding preparation: practice, practice, practice!  You must practice reading, writing, and being responsive to answering questions and checking your work.

In the end, the bar exam is an honest test.  It tests your knowledge and application of the law.  The bar exam does not lie or cheat, and should not be a cause for alarm if you are prepared.  Bar results do not arrive until sometime after taking the bar exam, however, there is something to be said about walking into and out of the bar exam with confidence and conviction in your preparation and abilities.  Lastly, treat the exam as a job and run the race.

Wishing all of you the best with the bar exam.  Remember those who pushed, guided, and encouraged you before, during, and after the bar exam.

Game Notes  11/11/2013

Game 1:

Time: 2pm Conditions: Stinky with a whole lot of Pinkies Match-Up: #StinkyPinkies v. CW Free Agents Score: 3-0

For the 1 Cal West Free agent that showed up, he performed admirably against a wave of pink.  The Pinkies decided to still get a scrimmage in and lent 5 players to have a game of 6 on 6 to keep their skills sharp. Next week Biff- Cal West’s captain and only member will recruit his friends to have a fairer and less pink soccer team to compete.

Game 2:

Time: 3pm Conditions: A lot of little Happy Feet... and Goals Match- Up: Happy Feet v. TBD Score: 13-2

Happy Feet were lacking some players but it did not slow them down with 5 goals within the first 15 minutes. Comments after the game from Happy Feet were that it was a “fun game” and “Dre League Scorer Animal”- who I can only assume they were talking about the goalie who premiered his forward striker position for 2 goals.

TBD had Brad as the MVP of his team with the only 2 goals scored for TBD. Brad also suffered a pretty bad collision that he might not walk off in time for next week but let’s hope for a quick recovery so the team can regain the MVP again for next week.

When interviewed TBD collectively agreed to “erase that game from memory.”

Game 3:

Time: 4pm Conditions: Preemption with tufts of goals  Match-Up: 4L’s Do It Longer v. Cal West #2 Score: 4-8

4L’s Do It Longer really knew how to handle the media this week.   Before the game they gave pre-emptory comments for both a win and a loss. So for the loss they commented that “we did not work hard enough which really showed on the field today with a 4 goal loss.

Cal West #2 had two very good strikers that did all the work.  So much so that at one point during the game they decided that instead of just scoring goals they would also play defense for the rest of the game.

Cal West #2 declined to comment after the win.

Game 4

Time: 5pm Conditions: So Many Legends, Not Enough Time Match-Up: The Jugardores: Soccer Legends v. Delman’s Dozens Score: 2-3

This was an intense game with bend- it- like- Beckham moves on defense with some Orange County Housewife levels of bickering between the two teams.

Delman’s Dozens sealed the game with 5 minutes left with a Puneet goal that moved them ahead by 1 and freed them from the never enjoyable tie.

Game 5

Time: 6pm Conditions: Roids and Deltoids Match-Up: Malicious Tortfeasors v. REAL Madrid FC Score: 2-17

Even playing a player down, REAL Madrid came out with a fierceness that was seen from Bobbydihno in the back of the onion bag with a hat trick

Even REAL Madrids goalie was stellar and kept shutting down Malicious Tortfeasors strong kicks to the corners of the goal.

Malicious Tortfeasors gave it their all but it just couldn’t cut it next to the well-practiced and trained abroad (semi) pro players of REAL Madrid FC.

Administration is looking into the drug tests of REAL Madrid to make sure none of the players are on steroids.

Game Notes  11/3/2013

Game 1

Time: 2pm Conditions: Happy with a feel of Malicious. Match-Up: Happy Feet v. Malicious Tortfeasors Score: 17-1

This game was one sided from the start as the Malicious Tortfeasors claimed and too bad it was not in their favor. Happy Feet came out stomping with an impressive 17 goals to negate any spineless talk from the forfeit of the previous week.

Happy Feet declined to comment only saying that their play spoke for them to the media.

Game 2

Time: 3pm Conditions: A Spanish Especial Showcase Match- Up: 4L’s Do It Longer v. REAL Madrid FC Score: 1-10

The 4L’s must have let themselves go after last weeks domination over their opponent. REAL Madrid FC came through with some professionals straight from Spain who wore mustaches to prove it.

REAL Madrid commented that their win was attributed to the women on their team as well as the always cheery slogan of “Suns out, Guns out!”

The 4L’s declined to comment, but will surely come back next week prepared to kick some soccer bootaayyy.

Game 3

Time: 4pm Conditions: Positivity is in the Air Match-Up: The Jugadores: Soccer Legends v. CW #2 Score: 2-6

Game 3 started out touch and go with moves like Beckham by both sides, but quickly turned into a fierce game that proved that CW #2 was better suited for todays soccer match-up.

The Jugadores commented that they “only lost by 4… NOT 8! Baby Steps to a win!” I fully support that mentality.

Cal West #2 also oozed positivity with comments of “great ref!” (I wonder what they were slipping him to make calls in their favor), and “well organized” (thank god they did not show up last week!), and “overall very good game play”.

Thanks for such an uplifting game note, hope we can give all of that and more at next weeks games!

Game 4

Time: 5pm Conditions: Stinky with a lot of TBD. Match-Up: #StinkyPinkies v. TBD Score: 4-5

Game 4 started with some major enthusiasm which quickly gave way to shouts for oxygen. TBD and #StinkyPinkies were well matched although the #SP’s had only 1 sub while TBD seemed to have endless amounts of fresh legs. The game was a close one through and through. Every goal was matched by an opposition goal- it resembled the house during the government shutdown… 1 punch for 1 punch for each side. It came down to the final minutes when the Pinkies just could not hold out for any longer and finally let one slide to let TBD gain the win.

Both teams had phenomenal plays with some heat placed behind each kick and a little grab ass with some leap frog on the side to throw the teams off their game.

Game 5

Time: 6pm Conditions: Forfeit with a side of practice Match-Up: Delman’s Dozens v. Cal West Free Agents Score: 3-0

Delman’s Dozens were ready to dominate for the second week in a row when word got out that Cal West Free Agents would not be showing up. Because of this unforeseen occurrence, and luckily for the great planning of the team captain of the DD’s it became an impromptu practice session.

This should be a warning to all other teams to play Delman’s Dozens… they are prepared and practice more than you, beware.
