It is the policy of Thomas Jefferson School of Law to afford equal opportunity to all individuals regardless of race (including hair texture and protective hairstyles), creed, color, religion, sex (including transgender, gender, gender identity and expression), national origin, ancestry, age, marital status, military or veteran status, physical and mental disability, medical condition, genetic information, sexual orientation, or other characteristic protected by law. Our students, as well as our applicants, employees, and others with whom we do business, will not be subjected to sexual, racial, religious, ethnic, or any other form of unlawful discrimination or harassment. The law school will not condone such conduct, whether committed by an administrator, faculty member, staff person, agent, contractor or student. Nor will it permit discrimination to affect any employment, admissions, or academic decision.

An exception to our policy of non-discrimination is granted to representatives of the U.S. Department of Defense who may discriminate on a basis not permitted by our policy. This exception is made in order to avoid the loss of federal funds that would otherwise be imposed by the 1996 Solomon Amendment.

San Diego is beaches, bays, estuaries, lakes, hills, canyons, meadows, mountains, deserts, an international border and really nice sunsets. It’s a hub for outdoor sports and activities. The region has unique cities, towns and neighborhoods that offer international appeal, great dining and eclectic entertainment and activities. Cultural arts abound throughout the area, although the hub is considered to be Balboa Park where the city’s major cultural institutions are located. But don’t look for the avant-garde or cutting-edge groups there. Those organizations are strewn throughout the city, like jewels waiting to be discovered.

You can’t beat San Diego for sightseeing, whether it is watching a Navy ship returning from sea at the Cabrillo National Monument on the tip of the Point Loma peninsula, or sitting on the sea wall along South Mission Beach to watch the teams compete in beach volleyball. The beach is a way of life in San Diego and stretches from the border with Mexico up through Oceanside, featuring miles of public beaches that grace seaside cities and communities along historic Pacific Coast Highway. The hills of the eastern edges of the county beckon for many, too. Hundreds of people hike Mission Trails Regional Park’s Cowles Mountain every day, burning calories and enjoying the 360-degree views from the peak before the sun sets. Mountain bikers have hundreds of miles of trails to ride, and horse-back riders are often trail mates for hikers in the state and national parks located in San Diego. If you’re curious, you’ll find it.

Most days are mild with the daily temperature ranges from 55 to 77 degrees year round, although there are day-time highs and night-time lows for every season in every distinct area. America’s Finest City has countless activities for residents and tourists alike. Some of San Diego’s most popular visitor destinations are listed below or you can visit the Tourism Authority for more information.

Seaport Village

Seaport Village offers free entertainment, leisurely strolling and window-shopping at any of the 54 specialty shops. Enjoy a day of relaxation by hanging out on the grass and watching the yachts and ships pass by on the San Diego Bay, or dine at one of seventeen bay-view eateries.

Gaslamp Quarter

A historic San Diego neighborhood, consisting of 16½ blocks of renovated turn-of-the-century Victorian architecture, boutiques, art galleries, specialty shops and more. Enjoy fine dining options from 100 restaurants, in addition to nightlife and entertainment.

Old Town San Diego

Old Town is a legacy of San Diego history. This neighborhood’s historic buildings include the blacksmith shop, Seeley Stables, Stewart House, Estudillo House and the oldest schoolhouse in San Diego. You’ll also enjoy wonderful Mexican cuisine, art galleries and shops that sell unique and one-of-a-kind merchandise.

Balboa Park

Balboa Park is known for its beautiful Spanish Colonial Revival architecture. It also offers 15 museums (select museums free on Tuesdays for San Diego residents), free daily park tours, public organ concerts (Sundays), and spectacular gardens (seven are free daily).

San Diego Zoo (Located in Balboa Park) and San Diego Zoo Safari Park (less than 40 miles from downtown San Diego)

Thomas Jefferson School of Law is strongly committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment where everyone is valued and supported so that everyone has the opportunity to thrive.  The Law School respects all types of diversity and also recognizes the particular history of traditionally marginalized groups.

One of the reasons we have such a dynamic and vibrant law school community is that we are tremendously diverse.  As of today, students of color make up nearly 60% of our student body, and more than 50% of our students are women.  We come from many different cultures and regions.  We identify with many different races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, gender identities, and religions.  We have had a wide range of life experiences.  The discussions and relationships that spring from bringing such diverse perspectives together in one place, where important issues in law and society are discussed every day, enrich us all in lasting ways.  This is one of the reasons the Law School’s mission includes providing an outstanding legal education for a diverse student body.  Learning from and working with others from a rich array of different backgrounds is critical to becoming an effective lawyer in an increasingly globalized society.

As we pursue this mission, we expect all Law School community members to embrace inclusion and help to promote an environment of mutual respect.

The study of law, particularly in a time of growing divisions across the country, benefits from a truly collegial and supportive environment, where all types of diversity are embraced and welcomed.  Diversity, of course, includes many dimensions:  race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity and expression, national origin, religion, ancestry, age, marital status, veteran status, disability and more.  The Law School strives to be a place where all types of diversity are respected, and discrimination on these bases is not tolerated.  Diversity is only the first step: to truly create a community, we must be inclusive as well.

The Law School’s policies against discrimination and harassment (found in the Student Handbook) play important roles, but nothing is as important as the effort of all members of the community to cultivate an inclusive mindset and to be accepting of all backgrounds and life experiences.  The Law School invites all community members with concerns or ideas for fostering a more diverse and inclusive environment to contact Dean Linda Keller, President Karin Sherr, Associate Dean Anders Kaye, or Assistant Dean Lisa Ferreira.

Diversity Pledge

The Thomas Jefferson School of Law faculty has unanimously endorsed the San Diego County Bar Association’s Diversity Pledge.
