Thomas Jefferson School of Law's faculty are dedicated and skilled teachers, committed to helping each student discover their professional identity, succeed in law school, and excel in legal practice. They are accomplished lawyers, passionate educators, and voracious students of the law themselves. They are engaged in all aspects of campus life, from organizing professional and academic conferences, to coaching student competition teams and advising student organizations, to mentoring every law student and joining in student organized events.  Together, they strive to make the law school experience personally rich and professionally rewarding for every student who crosses the threshold of Thomas Jefferson School of Law.

Our professors have a wealth of real-world legal experience. They have structured business transactions at both the international and domestic levels. They have litigated before the World Court at The Hague, the U.S. Supreme Court, and federal and state trial and appellate courts. Their clients have ranged from the largest multi-national corporations to the neediest members of our society.

Our faculty are also prolific scholars.  Our professors have authored treatises, casebooks, and other scholarly books that are used by universities and practitioners throughout the United States and abroad. They regularly produce cutting-edge research -- in areas ranging from intellectual property to entertainment law, from labor and employment to international investment, from constitutional law to criminal law -- that is published in leading journals and cited by many courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court.  They have testified before Congress and state legislatures, have appeared as experts on national television and radio news broadcasts, and have served as legal consultants to our government, the United Nations and several foreign governments.

Drawing on their wealth of practical experience and their cutting edge research, Thomas Jefferson's faculty make it their mission to nurture and educate the next generation of talented and committed lawyers, to help them achieve their professional aspirations, and to prepare them to join, contribute to, and lead the California legal community.

Tucked into the southwest corner of the United States along the Pacific Ocean, the City of San Diego is one of the 10 largest cities in the country, and the second largest in California, with approximately 1.35 million people. More than 3 million people live in the County of San Diego, which stretches from the Pacific Ocean on the west, to the desert in the east, to city of San Clemente in the north, and borders Mexico to the South.

Because of its geography, the region is a hub for recreation and outdoor activities. Restaurants, museums and attractions are open all year long due to the region’s mild weather.

San Diego also is known for its innovative and entrepreneurial companies, its scientific development and research, its manufacturing and industrial business, and its stunning hospitality sector that welcomes the world to its doors through the Port of San Diego.

The international border with Mexico is the busiest in the world and the cooperative relationship between the cities of Tijuana and San Diego is at the heart of many businesses in the region.

Downtown San Diego is the center for San Diego city and county governments and is also home to one of the busiest U.S. District Courts in the country in terms of cases. Most business headquarters are located downtown or in the communities of Rancho Bernardo, Sorrento Valley and Kearny Mesa, just miles north of downtown.

The blue jewel of downtown San Diego is San Diego Bay, which is within walking distance of Thomas Jefferson School of Law. The law school is also just two blocks from the Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres in a thriving, vibrant area known as East Village. It is home to modern office buildings and new residential spaces, creating a dynamic urban community close to historic Balboa Park, the trendy Gaslamp Quarter, the haven of Little Italy, and the scenic waterfront shops and restaurants of Seaport Village and The Headquarters. San Diego is a city full of diverse neighborhoods, including an array of beach communities, urban centers and suburban areas to match every taste and stage of life.

It’s the ocean that is the main attraction in San Diego. With some 70 miles of coastline, San Diego features lots of sandy beaches and good waves for all types of surfing. To the east are the Laguna Mountains, where snow falls during the winter. Beyond the mountains is the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, the largest state park in California.

Within the city limits is Mission Bay Park, which features acres of lagoons, picnic grounds, beaches, running and biking paths and playgrounds.

When not studying, you could visit one of the many museums in Balboa Park, go windsurfing on Mission Bay, hike the ocean-view trails at Torrey Pines State Park or Mission Trails Regional Park, or visit the world famous San Diego Zoo. Concerts, professional sporting events, fine dining, and great Mexican food at hundreds of local taco shops, are just some of the things that make San Diego special.

San Diego is the epitome of the Southern California lifestyle, with friendly people and the personal and professional opportunities of a major metropolitan area. Thomas Jefferson School of Law is in the ideal location for you to earn your law degree.

The classrooms in our law school are “smart classrooms.”

That means our 21st Century technology is more innovative than anything you may have seen – smarter, faster and with amazing intuitive abilities that make the classroom experience come alive.

Our aim is to improve teaching, learning and productivity while benefiting the environment with our “greener” systems.

The network is based on fast, reliable wireless access available to all students. It allows TJSL to provide you with more consistent access to Internet resources, multi-media content, podcasts and resources we will add in the future.

When asked, students are even able to connect their laptops to the classroom projectors wirelessly and share the contents of their screen!

Integrated video conferencing equipment is being used to bring off-site instructors and guests into our new classrooms -- as well as to join multiple classrooms together. You’ll feel like you’re in the same classroom with other students anywhere in the world – because you can see them and talk to them virtually!

Loans

Financial Aid provided by either the federal government or private lenders. Interest accrues once the loan disburses and the federal loans have origination fees. This is financial aid that must be repaid.

Federal Stafford Loans are low interest loans available to eligible students, in the JD program, to assist them with costs related to their education. These loans are made by the federal government and are known as “Direct Stafford Loans”. The annual maximum Stafford loan for law students is $20,500. The current interest rate for this loan is fixed at 6.08%. Repayment begins six months after the borrower graduates, leaves school, or drops to less than half-time enrollment. Since the entire Stafford loan is unsubsidized, interest accrual begins once the loan is disbursed.

To apply for a Federal Stafford loan, complete the Stafford loan request form or come in to the Financial Aid Office for more information.

All eligible JD students may borrow a Graduate PLUS Loan in addition to the Stafford loan to help pay for living expenses. A credit check is required and performed by the federal government. You must be enrolled at least half-time, be a US Citizen, US National, or Permanent Resident, and pass the government’s credit check to be approved for the loan. The interest rate is fixed at 7.08% and the loan is deferred while enrolled in law school. Your income and credit score will not affect your eligibility. The maximum amount is calculated to be the total cost of attendance minus any other financial aid. To apply for the Grad Plus loan, go to https://studentaid.gov/plus-app/.

Private student loans are available to help defray the cost of attending the Graduate Programs. Students may choose any lender they wish, but here is a link with some available lenders: https://finaid.org/loans/privatestudentloans/

Limited institutional scholarships are available for graduate LLM, MSL and JSD candidates.

Select scholarships are available through private organizations and affiliations for JD students.

  • JD Applicants – Limited institutional scholarships are available for select JD candidates. Learn more HERE.
  • Graduate Applicants - Limited institutional scholarships are available for graduate LLM, MSL and JSD candidates.

Select scholarships are available through private organizations and affiliations for JD students: https://www.tjsl.edu/admissions/financial-aid/types-aid/outside-scholarships

This need-based program is designed to provide jobs to help students with educational expenses. In addition to the regular eligibility requirements, the program requires that participants be in good academic standing. The pay rate is $14.00 per hour. Federal work study students can earn money at eligible on or off-campus employment. Work study does not need to be repaid but is considered taxable income.

How to Apply for Federal Aid (Eligible Students)

Applicants can help ensure their financial aid applications are given maximum consideration by carefully reading the following instructions and submitting all materials to the Financial Assistance Office or the appropriate agency as early as possible.

Step 1

Complete a FAFSA online at https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa (school code is 013780).

Step 2

Students who want to receive Federal Stafford loans should complete a Stafford loan request form. Completed forms may be faxed, scanned/emailed or mailed to the Financial Aid Office.

Applying for a Graduate PLUS loan requires students to go online to begin the loan process. The website is https://studentaid.gov/plus-app/. This loan is credit-based and the federal government will determine your eligibility.

Step 3

New borrowers must complete a Master Promissory Note (MPN) and entrance counseling to receive federal loans. This is done online at https://studentaid.gov/entrance-counseling/. There are 2 separate MPN’s (Stafford and Grad PLUS). Both will need to be completed if requesting both loans.
