Dear Prospective Student,

At Thomas Jefferson, we are passionate about helping our students succeed in law school, on the bar exam, and as lawyers. Supporting our students is central to our mission. As Interim Dean and a long-time faculty member at Thomas Jefferson School of Law, I’d like to tell you about some of the unique ways our faculty help our students flourish and succeed.

Of course, like the faculty at any law school that values teaching and learning, we work hard to bring you the very best classroom experience. We are dedicated instructors who love to teach, and high quality classroom teaching is a top priority for all of us. We also understand that much important law school learning happens outside the classroom, and are committed to supporting our students in every setting so they can meet the academic program’s high standards and lay the foundation to be confident, successful attorneys. Faculty advise every student organization, coach competition teams, give references and write recommendations for students and alumni, and work to connect you with their professional networks as you start to plan your career. As a very small school with a dedicated faculty, we are able to do these things especially well, with student-centered classes and professors who get to know their students as individuals.

But these things are just the foundation for the individualized personal attention that is our mission.  We aim to do much more, including --

Mentoring. Every new student at Thomas Jefferson is connected to a faculty mentor -- a member of the faculty who helps you navigate all the challenges of law school, advises you about course choices and career opportunities, and is available to talk about anything that comes up during your time at the law school. Faculty mentors get to know students more fully, and students always have someone to turn to for personalized advice.

Providing Extensive Individual Feedback. At many law schools, the only way students know how they’re doing is when they see the grades on their final exams – often just numbers or letters with no further explanation. Things are different at Thomas Jefferson. We have made meaningful, constructive, personal feedback an integral part of your law school experience. At Thomas Jefferson, you will have a lower-stakes midterm exam with substantial feedback and guidance about how to improve in nearly every required exam course. In upper-level paper courses, your professor will review and discuss your work at several stages before the final paper is due.  In required doctrinal courses, you'll also have practice exercises throughout the semester so you can monitor your progress and work through problem areas with your professor.  If you run into difficulties in a first year course or an upper-level bar tested course, your professor will work with you after the midterm to help you get back on track. And, of course, we are always happy to recognize and celebrate your successes – many students who are successful in a professor’s course end up working with that professor as a learning assistant and receive references and recommendations from that professor as they seek summer and post-graduate positions.

Pursuing Shared Interests in the Fellow Programs and Centers. Many of our students participate in special programs in which they work closely with professors who are experts in areas of shared interest. Students with a passion for practicing criminal law join the Criminal Law Fellowship Program. Those excited about intellectual property participate in the Fellow Program in Intellectual Property. Other students pursue certificates from our academic centers including those focused on criminal law, intellectual property and sports law, to name a few. In all these programs, students are supervised and mentored by faculty who share their interests and want to help them succeed -- by introducing them to the field, connecting them to professional networks, and leading them through small group discussions or classes.

Collaborating with Students in School Events. Faculty regularly partner with students to present important school events. For example, faculty and students have worked together closely to organize the Law School’s annual Women and the Law Conference, intellectual property conferences, and conferences on fashion and the law -- collaborative projects that are rewarding for students and faculty alike. Faculty and students have also joined forces to host and run major interscholastic competitions, including a highly regarded National Sports Law Negotiation Competition. Faculty participate enthusiastically in vibrant student-driven events like the annual Barrister’s Ball and the Law School’s talent show. And an accomplished and popular faculty band – the Innocent Bystanders– has been known to perform at Law School events.

In these and many other ways, Thomas Jefferson makes sure that all our students work closely with and receive constructive, personalized feedback from their professors, from the first day of law school to the last. And every student has the opportunity to pursue his or her ambitions and passions in a program tailored to them. You won't be lost in an ocean of students here. You’ll get to know us, and we’ll get to know you.

I’d be happy to discuss any of this with you in more detail. Please feel free to call 619-961-4282 or email if you would like to follow up regarding our faculty.

All the best,

Linda M. Keller
Interim Dean

Fatima Askerova, 3L

San Diego, CA; California State University – Fullerton, B.A.

I was looking for a school that was close to home, here in San Diego.  While working at an employment law firm, I started to research law schools.  TJSL appeared to be a great option based on reviews from the attorneys that worked at the firm. My choice has been proven right over and over again thanks to the amazing students, faculty and staff.  My law school career has been better than expected!

Edward Burak, 2L

Arlington Heights, IL; University of Colorado – Boulder, B.A.

I chose to attend TJSL for its excellent location and because I wanted the experience of a smaller campus.  TJSL has provided me unique opportunities to establish personal relationships with professors who have helped me gain insight into my future legal career. TJSL's special focus on bar passage through its Academic Success and Bar Preparation department has given me outstanding study skills, furthering my confidence that with the right amount of hard work, I will be a practicing attorney only months after receiving my J.D.

Jordan Collinsworth, 2L

Bend, Oregon; Weber State University, B.S.

I began meeting judges and attorneys within the San Diego area during my second week of school. I had the opportunity to volunteer at our school-hosted Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR) competition and watch students from other prestige law schools argue great scenarios against our own TJSL students.  Through mentorships, organization meetings and guest speakers, there will be miles of opportunities for you to emphasize your success to not only get you set up, but also to plug you into opportunities. The faculty and staff's constant willingness to help your journey is invaluable, ask and you shall receive is really my motto.

Matt Smith, 3L

San Diego, CA; San Diego State University,  B.S., M.S.

Some law schools are so large that students are merely known by their student ID number.  At TJSL, the faculty and staff actually know students by name. As a result,  they all go out of their way to assist you through your academic journey and set you up for success.

Sarai Suarez, 3L

Boston, MA; University of Massachusetts – Boston, B.A.

At TJSL, we have many opportunities to serve in leadership positions. I currently serve as the President of the Sexual and Domestic Violence Law Student Association. Through the organization,  I am able to make a difference in our public and legal community, all while earning my JD degree.  It's an opportunity that I am extremely grateful to have.

Nadia Akaweih, '17
Houston, TX: Baylor University, B.S. & University of Southern California, M.S

One of the best decisions I ever made was attending Thomas Jefferson School of Law to take part in the IP Fellowship Program. While in the program, I have drafted patents for low-income inventors in the Small Business Law Center, worked as a student patent examiner at the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and as a paid legal intern at Maxwell Technologies working in conjunction with a leading national patent law firm, Knobbe Martens. Additionally, I competed amongst the best of the best in the American Intellectual Property Law Association Giles Rich Moot Court competition representing TJSL and received the American Intellectual Property Law Association’s Sidney B. Williams Jr. Intellectual Property Law Scholars Program Scholarship for $10,000. Without the guidance, encouragement, and support of the IP staff at TJSL, none of this would have been possible.

Alina Bazar, 1L
San Diego, CA: San Diego State University, B.S.

I’ve talked to a lot of students about why they picked TJSL. A close friend of mine told me that although she visited classes of other higher ranked schools, ‘no other school provides the level of engagement and effort that we get here at TJSL.’ From my personal experience here, I am really impressed with how much the professors care about the students’ success. Here, we have a huge level of support from the professors. They are all eager to help and willing to go above and beyond to help you learn the material.

Ethan Dreiman, 2L
Los Angeles, CA: California State – Northridge, B.S.

“Although I had other offers and scholarships from other schools, I choose TJSL because I felt as though I belonged. I felt connected. People here are approachable and really want to help you. During a forum, the Dean mentioned to us that ‘law school is a vehicle’ and that it was ‘up to us to take advantage where the vehicle could take [us].’ TJSL creates opportunity for learning and I knew that a law degree from TJSL would help me in furthering my career.”

Bridget Watson, 3L
Raleigh, NC: North Carolina State, B.S.

“I chose to attend TJSL because it would allow me to gain practical experience in addition to the traditional doctrinal education. Coming from the working world, I wished I had more opportunities to gain practical experience in my undergraduate education and TJSL offers a wealth of real-world opportunities for students. Participating in the Patent Clinic has allowed me to engage in client counseling, patent drafting, and patent prosecution which has provided me with a great advantage throughout my internship experiences.
Participating in moot court allowed me to practice my brief writing skills in multiple areas of law and learn how to orally advocate for my client. Other practical classes such as Legal Writing, Civil Procedure II, and Intro to IP Practice have provided me with the skills to draft legal documents such as memos, complaints, discovery, motions, briefs, and client and opposing counsel correspondence that I have used for templates throughout multiple internships.
Overall, attending TJSL has allowed me to develop practical skills that I have repeatedly used real world.”

Former Extern Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, currently Associate Justinian PLLC

“I was exposed to the entire patent prosecution process ranging from taking the paperwork [that a] scientist would give the patent attorney; turning that into claims for the patent application; and taking a patent to license agreements between Pfizer and its licensees. This included filing U.S. and foreign patent applications as well. It was truly an extraordinary experience, and it is certainly something I am proud to have done. My mentor was very knowledgeable and showed patience with a novice like me. I couldn't have asked for a better summer.”

Sumant Pathak
Sumant Pathak, '14
Fremont, CA: University of California – Bakersfield, B.S.
Intellectual Property Associate & Patent Attorney at Rosenberg Klein & Lee and May

“The Intellectual Property Fellowship Program at Thomas Jefferson was extremely helpful to me because it allowed me to develop practical skills while also taking insightful classes that focused on various aspects of intellectual property. The USPTO Patent Clinic was integral to my initial learning of various skills required to be a successful patent practitioner. I was able to hone these skills with a local San Diego IP law firm through the school’s externship program. I was also able to partake in intellectual property classes ranging from Trademark and Patent Law to one on Open Source. I was thus able to blend the intellectual rigor of the IP classes at the school with practical skills to present myself as a viable candidate to various firms. Moreover, the keen interest and help from the IP fraternity at the school, ranging from professors to alumni, allowed me make a seamless transition from the technical field to the legal field.”

Thomas Jefferson School of Law seeks to admit a diverse class of qualified students. We are looking for students who, through their personal, intellectual or professional background and experience, will contribute to the rich tapestry of our law school community. The admissions process is holistic, meaning our goal is to evaluate many factors of an applicant’s file before reaching a decision.

All applicants are reviewed carefully to determine whether they have the ability to complete successfully the law school’s program of legal education. Numerical factors considered include the applicant’s First Year Predicted Average (FYP), the applicant’s score on the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT), the applicant’s Undergraduate Grade Point Average (UGPA), and if applicable, the applicant’s Graduate Grade Point Average (GGPA). Additional factors that are considered during the review process include, but are not limited to, writing skills; leadership and maturity as evidenced by work and service experience; letters of recommendation; rigor of the collegiate program; assessments made during applicant interviews; statements of overcoming adversity; previous law study, including whether an applicant was previously disqualified from law school; and ethical or criminal violations.

The Admissions Committee reviews applications as they become complete on a continuous basis and communicates decisions as early as possible. An applicant may accept an offer of admission by submitting the required nonrefundable deposit, which is credited toward tuition. The Law School adheres to a policy of operating free of improper harassment and discrimination and encourages applications from traditionally underrepresented groups. For a complete summary of the Law School’s policies, please see the Student Handbook.

“I cannot emphasize enough the real-world practical experience you will gain from working in the patent clinic,…you can tell your potential employers that you already have experience doing many of the things that will be required of you, something that many law school students do not have the opportunity to say….I believe experience in the patent clinic is the single most important thing a TJSL student interested in patent law can do….”

I am currently a second-year student at Thomas Jefferson School of Law. Having a military parent,  I moved around a lot for the first half of my life; from being born in New York, to living in London and Okinawa. It wasn’t until middle school when my family finally settled down in sunny San Diego. I have loved living here so much that I couldn’t see myself going anywhere else, which is why I decided to go to Thomas Jefferson located in the heart of San Diego. Aside from being a Student Ambassador, I am an active member of Phi Alpha Delta, Asian Pacific American Law Student Association and the Student Bar Association. I will also be participating in the Moot Court Honors Society this year. During TJSL’s study abroad program in China I discovered that my main passion lies in Entertainment Law with an interest for Intellectual Property specifically in Copyright and Trademark. I became a part of my school's Intellectual Property Fellowship and strive to be an advocate for artists' works and rights. Thomas Jefferson has given me many opportunities during my time as a 1L. I am excited to start this new year and help more people find their place here. If you have any questions about the application process or would just like to learn more about what it's like to be a Thomas Jefferson law student, please feel free to email me!

I am a third year law student at Thomas Jefferson School of Law. I am a San Diego native and avid beach goer. I attended the University of California, Los Angeles (go Bruins!) where I received my BA in Political Science with a minor in Chicana/o Studies. A few years later, I attended the University of San Diego for my paralegal credentials and ultimately decided I wanted to go to law school. Aside from being a Student Ambassador, I am an active member and the Secretary of the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Society. I am also a member of the La Raza student organization, the Public Interest Law Foundation, the Family Law Society and the Business Law Society here on campus. I am a La Raza mentor for incoming law school students and enjoy giving back to my community. Once I graduate I am interested in practicing business and corporate law. If you have any questions about living in San Diego, the law school admissions process, or just want a student’s prospective please do not hesitate to reach out. I look forward to sharing my experiences and insight with you.

Summer Young

I am a second-year student at Thomas Jefferson School of Law. I was born and raised in a small town in Minnesota, where I eventually grew sick of the snow and ice, which is when I made my way to the West Coast for college. I moved to Lake Tahoe, in northern California, to study at Sierra Nevada College. I completed my BSBA in Ski Business and Resort Management and upon graduation, I decided that southern California was the only place that I wanted to move to next. Aside from being a Student Ambassador in Admissions, I am very active on campus. I am on Law Review, I hold the position of Director for Academic Success for the Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity, and I am both an active Intellectual Property Fellow and a Sports Law Fellow. I have found a strong interest in the Intellectual Property realm of law, specifically music and the rights that come along with Copyrights within the Entertainment Industry. In my very limited free time, I like to exercise, go to the beach with friends and read health-related books. TJSL truly has become a home for me and I am very thankful for the friends I made during my first year. I am excited to start this new year and to help any prospective or current student during the transition period into being a law student and the life that comes with it. If you have any questions about anything related to life in San Diego and life at TJSL, please feel free to email me!
